One problem that many people face when starting to do visualization is that they keep changing what they visualize before the goal was achieved. This is often due to the lack of self-understanding and poor goal setting technique. During the time when I was starting to search for the right path for me, I used to do sales, network marketing and many other things. When I was in sales, I visualized myself being the top sales in the company. When I went into network marketing, I visualize myself being the number one in the company. Before I achieve those goals, I changed my goals and I changed what I visualized. This is bad because in success psychology, we always say success attracts success and failure attracts failure. When we have a successful experience, it is easier for our subconscious mind to relate to that experience and thus bring more of such experience to us. But if we keep having unsuccessful experiences, we will naturally fill our subconscious mind with images of those experiences, which becomes a hindrance in achieving our other goals. If we keep changing what we visualize or keep changing our goals, our faith in visualization will fall and our confidence in ourselves will also sink. In this case, the more we do visualization, the more we fail to achieve our goals and the worse we feel about ourselves. Eventually visualization becomes a tedious and unrewarding process that actually hinders our progress instead of helping us! You may ask, what should I visualize then? If you have a crystal clear goal that you want to achieve, by all means go ahead and visualize the result that you want to see. Don't visualize the process because the process is unknown to you. Leave it to the superconscious mind. Stay flexible in your path and focus on the end result. But if you currently belong to 97% of the population, there is a high chance that you are not very sure what goal you REALLY want. If that is the case, you can do the following analysis. Illustration A As an illustration, assuming you are in sales. Ask yourself what do you want to achieve from this job? If the answer is to be the top sales, then ask yourself why you want to be the top sales. Say your answer is to establish a track record of yourself. Ask the same question why you want to set a track record and your answer may be to fulfill your sense of achievement. Once you get to the feeling aspect of the goal, stop the analysis. From this example, you know that in your value system, sense of achievement is very important. So when you do visualization, you may want to visualize yourself being the top sales. See yourself being admired by other people. Feel yourself having the sense of achievement. Illustration B Assuming you are in sales also. Everyday your manager ask you to shout "I’m the top sales!". So you think your goal is to be the top sales. Now ask yourself, why you want to be the top sales. Your answer cannot be because your manager says so. The answer must come from your heart. Say your heart's answer is to make a lot of money. Then ask yourself why you want so much money. You answer may be to provide for your family. The answer can even be because you want to make your parents proud. Ask why again and your answer may be because you want to make them happy, because when they are happy, you are happy. In this case, sense of warmth is your motivating factor and your top value. So when you do visualization, you can visualize yourself being the top sales, but the scenario may be you are seeing your parents clapping hands, happily seeing you receiving the top sales award. Hey, you may not even want to visualize yourself being the top sales. You may want to just visualize you and your family living in a big house and everyone is very happy. Top sales to you is just a tool, it is not the REAL goal that you want to achieve. Ending comments Over time, as you read more and learn more from books and experience, your value system may change. If that happens, just tell yourself that the goal is no longer important to you and you are dismissing it. Never feel bad about not achieving a goal that you have changed. Instead, tell yourself that you have found a goal that is much better than the old one. An important beliefs that I keep programming into my subconscious mind is this: "If I can't get what I want, that's because I have not asked enough; Something better is waiting for me." This single belief has opened to me windows of opportunities whenever I face a challenge. Remember, your belief becomes your reality.
